In
news that will come as
no surprise to anyone
who lives in Brookings,
the town will be recognized
as one of eight great
coastal towns in which
to retire by a national
magazine.
In its November issue,
"Where to Retire"
magazine will recognize
Brookings as one of eight
great beach communities
in which to retire. "The
article is the latest
in a series of accolades
the area has received
in recent years",
said Les Cohen, president
and chief executive officer
of the Brookings-Harbor
Chamber of Commerce.
"We're always extremely
pleased when outside sources
recognize what a wonderful
area this is. Whether
we seek that recognition
or not, it happens",
Cohen explained. "You
can't put a dollar amount
on that type of publicity,
on that kind of announcement".
"In recent years,
the Brookings-Harbor area
has been singled out by
several national publications.
Sunset Magazine designated
Harris Beach as one of
the best beaches on the
West Coast," Cohen
said.
"In August, 2000,
Fortune magazine listed
Brookings as one of their
idyllic hideaways to call
home", he added.
"That was nation
wide and included such
places as Ketchum, Idaho,
near Sun Valley, and Colorado
Springs", Cohen said.
"So that was something
we hadn¹t really
sought ourselves, but
we got a lot of attention
from it. It shows me when
we get that kind of recognition
on a national level, we
as a chamber," Cohen
said, "feel our message
is getting out".
The most recent article

Hemphill, a travel writer
from Newport Beach, Calif.
She said she couldn't
provide any details because
the story had not yet
published.
